Clara Lysecki
Faculty: 4th year, Human Ecology
Major: Nutritional Sciences
Completed: University 1
Pursuing: Bachelor of Science in Human Nutritional Sciences

Long before stepping foot into the Human Ecology building, Clara Lysecki had already developed an interest in food and diet, and the inner workings of the human body.

Now a 4th year human nutritional sciences student, Clara continues to pursue those interests and discover answers to the questions that have captivated her since she was younger.

"I've always had a fascination with nutrition and food. I like knowing how the body works. If I'm sick I want to know why and how I can get better. "

Fortunately, Clara didn't have to attend the U of M for long before she was able to explore those interests.

"When I first started I just took courses that I knew I really wanted to take, like psychology and nutrition. I found it really interesting and relaxing. The University 1 advisors were really helpful in my first year. They helped me figure out the pre-requisites for my program. I needed to take a re-fresher course and they helped me figure that out, which was a huge help."

Since those days in University 1, Clara has been able to capitalize on some great opportunities offered by her program.

"The faculty has encouraged me to get in contact with dieticians to learn about the field and work alongside them to learn and get experience. The professors in the faculty encourage you to get research jobs which opens the door to what it's like to be a grad student and gain research experience. I am currently working with Dr. Harold Aukema to research how diets affect kidney disease."

While taking courses that feed her intellectual curiosity, Clara has also enjoyed stepping into the university's thriving big-league atmosphere.

"I really like the campus. It's like a small city and everything that you need is right here. There is a lot going on. You can get involved with the community garden, the gym, recreation activities. There are also a lot of great, quiet places on campus where you can sit, relax, and study."
