Esther Kim
Faculty: 3rd year, Science
Pursuing: Bachelor of Science (Honours)
Plans to Pursue: Medicine

The University of Manitoba’s tagline may be “One University. Many Futures,” but for Esther Kim, a more suitable tagline might be “Two Universities. One Future.”

The 3rd-year Science student, now firmly rooted at the University of Manitoba, actually started her university career at another institution.

“I went to McMaster University for my first year with the hopes of continuing my education in a new environment. However, it was a difficult year for me and I felt that I did not succeed. My family and friends are in Winnipeg so I decided to come back and enter the University of Manitoba. It has been the best decision I have made in my university career. I absolutely love the University of Manitoba.”

Esther has flourished since coming home, not only academically but in all her pursuits. When it comes to being a student, she believes it means much more than just going to class.

“As a university student, my personal goal is to do my best with all the responsibilities given to me. This includes: student, council member, volunteer, teacher, translator, and student liaison for the Faculty of Science. I strive for excellence in all that I do and so far I’ve upheld my reputation.”

Currently, she is a Senator on the Science Students’ Association: “I love being involved with student government and extra-curricular activities and am very energetic in promoting the Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba.

She also volunteers with an organization called Inner City Youth Alive in Winnipeg’s North End: “Volunteering here has completely opened my eyes to the people living in the North End. Not only do I meet with the children and families, I am able to learn about their lives. This is an organization that is committed to bringing a change in the community. It is an amazing opportunity for university students to get involved and to be revealed to another part of Winnipeg.”

Esther also volunteers as a Youth Group Bible Study Teacher and Korean-English Translator at the Korean Church of Winnipeg: “Teaching bible study enables me to gain leadership and teaching experiences for the future. I am bilingual in Korean and English, and can use those abilities to help Korean International students at the University of Manitoba.”

Esther plans to enter the Faculty of Medicine after getting her science degree.
