Architect students and grads offer design workshops for kids
February 22nd, 2010The Manitoba chapter of Architects Without Borders Canada (AWB) and University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture students and graduates are excited to offer design workshops starting today at Art City. These after school workshops will offer children, youth and adults an introduction to various aspects of design. AWB members will conduct the workshops, giving them an opportunity to apply their coursework to real-world situations. The workshops run from February 22-24, 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Art City, a youth drop-in center at 616 Broadway Ave.
The topic of this year’s creative and artistic workshop will be urban-scale design: interaction and perception of the city. Three distinct themes relevant to the topic of city will be featured throughout the workshop: Ugly City vs. Pretty City, Light and Atmosphere, and Build and Destroy.
“Art City helps bring out the fun in architecture. Where else do you get to build a city and then try to demolish it all in the same week?,” says AWB volunteer Tanya Peters. “The participants at Art City are really proud of their community and it’s exciting to facilitate workshops that can demonstrate how relevant architecture and design is to even the tiniest aspects of life.”
