U of M president and vice-chancellor David Barnard meets with ‘homeless’ students

March 15th, 2010

Mayor Sam Katz gives donation to five Asper School of Business students who are spending five days outdoors to help raise awareness and collection donations for Winnipeg’s homeless.

It is all part of Five Days for the Homeless, a national charity campaign created by the University of Alberta in 2005 to help draw attention to homelessness.

“Given the prevalence of homelessness in this city, I think people tend to make assumptions about the people it involves. Sometimes I’m guilty of this too. This is an amazing opportunity to begin to develop a greater understanding and form a new and honest perspective,” student and participant Kayla Wai said.

This year 15 universities across Canada will participate in the campaign, each one choosing a local charity for the donations raised. Asper students chose to donate to Resource Assistance for Youth (RaY), a community-based social service organization in Winnipeg committed to helping at-risk youth and young adults.

Last year U of M students raised $13,000 for RaY, helping them purchase a van they now use for outreach work.

From 5 p.m. on March 14, to 5 p.m. on March 19, students will not use showers or indoor sleeping accommodations; they will not have income and must instead receive food through direct donation only.

Students must also attend all classes.

Participants’ experiences will be posted on an online blog available at 5days.ca/Winnipeg.

Windshield repair expert, provincial champion

February 12th, 2010

University of Manitoba student Justin Kathan has been named Manitoba’s Top Student Entrepreneur for 2010.

The announcement was made by national charitable organization, Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) and program supporter, CIBC.

“It is a great honor to be the recipient of this award as it acknowledges the merits of entrepreneurship and the benefits that it can and has created for so many, including myself,” said Kathan.

Kathan is the owner of KuRV Apparel, as well as a consulting company owning the Manitoba license to operate DECO Windshield Repair. In addition Justin is a full time student in the Faculty of Management at Asper School of Business.

Since 2008, Kathan has owned and operated DECO Windshield Repair within Manitoba, a service that provides expert windshield chip and crack repair within 15 minutes, often at no cost to the customer through comprehensive insurance coverage. Additionally, it saves thousands of windshields from landfills each year.

More recently, Kathan launched his second business - KuRV Apparel, a company providing high school students with an easy way to purchase, customize, and order high school graduation clothing.

Kathan’s largest business accomplishments to date include ranking 3rd in sales, in comparison to other licensees, as well as being named “Rookie of the year” for his leadership within DECO Windshield Repair.

As a provincial champion, Kathan will now move on to represent Manitoba in the regional round of competition taking place at the 2010 ACE Regional Exposition in Calgary on March 5, 2010.
