May 11th, 2009

Congratulations to the Asper School’s Dr. Wanda Wuttunee, who was named a Woman of Distinction in the Education & Training category, by the YM/YWCA at a gala dinner in Winnipeg on Wednesday, May 6, 2009.

Dr. Wuttunee is Director of the School’s Aboriginal Business Education Program. She is an internationally recognized leader in the field of Aboriginal economic development. Her work focuses on community development perspectives and, in particular, women’s contributions. She examines the strengths of the community and the gifts that Aboriginal people bring to the business table.

She is interested in the role of tradition, culture and gender in the decision-making process used by communities in their economic development strategies. Her extensive community involvement includes board positions and committee work focusing on issues of education, business and culture.

She is Cree and a member of the Red Pheasant Cree Nation, Saskatchewan. In the future, Dr. Wutunee will likely be remembered as a pioneer who helped lay the foundation for an Aboriginal community in Canada.

Hundreds of people attended the event, which is held annually to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of women to their community.
