Ian Moran
Faculty: University 1
Pursuing: Bachelor of Science
Plans to Pursue: Medicine

University 1 student Ian Moran knew that the size and pace of the University of Manitoba would be dramatically different from high school. But that's exactly what he was looking for.

"I was attracted to the fact that the U of M is a big university. There are more faculties that I can choose from, and lots of program offerings. Med School has always been appealing to me and they have that here."

With his eye on the Faculty of Medicine, via the Faculty of Science microbiology program, Ian is using the flexibility of University 1 to his advantage, jumping headfirst into the prerequisite science courses.

"I'm taking all the sciences: chemistry, biology, and physics, as well as statistics, astronomy, and sociology. Everything I need to enter the microbiology program."

Ian's post-secondary career essentially began in high school, where his high academic achievements and extracurricular accomplishments allowed him to land a prestigious scholarship.

"I was part of the Leader of Tomorrow program and I received a scholarship for $2,500 to start my first year of studies. The LOT program is geared towards students who are involved in their schools, community, and are high achievers. The program honours these students."

Ian's high school activities included music, sports, key club, yearbook editing and more.

"Outside of school I volunteer once a week at Siloam Mission, and when I have time Winnipeg Harvest and Habitat for Humanity." As a new student, Ian says his main concerns are finding his classes and being on time. Fortunately, he has help.

"Most of my friends are coming here! I have a friend who is actually registered for the same classes as me, so we will car-pool together."
