Summer time

May 13th, 2010

Hi everyone!

Congratulations on another year successfully complete, especially to the Pharmacy Graduates!  Good luck on your upcoming exams, and your future careers!  As a co-chair for my grad next year, I attended grad this year and it was so much fun!  I can’t wait until next year!  I also want to wish all of the prospective pharmacy applicants who wrote the entrance exam a couple of weeks ago, good luck.  I can’t wait to see you all next year… our student council has a ton of great events in the works already.

The year for me is officially over, my placements were great at Polo Park Shoppers and Cancer Care Manitoba, and all of my books have been safely stowed away on my book shelf.  I have started my summer work, which will be keeping me very busy.  I am working part time at Shoppers Drug Mart, which I am loving so far, and working with a few of my professors on a summer research project entitled STRIPE- Student Reflections in Interprofessional Practice Education.  It feels so nice to come home at the end of the day and not have an evening worth of studying to do.  I had forgotten what it felt like to have free time… it feels great!  For now, I’m still just catching up on my lounging around, sleeping and trying to catch up with all my friends.  I even made it home to Morden for a couple of nights, and enjoyed, (yes that’s right, enjoyed) doing some yard work with my dad in the beautiful warm weather we had before the rainy spell started!

If you remember from some of my past blogs, my classmates and I put together a team for the MS walk again this year.  We walked along with hundreds of others on April 25th in Winnipeg at Grant Park High School.  We are still waiting for Team Pharmacy’s official total, but it is somewhere around $18,000!!  This is two grand higher than our goal this year and three grand more than last year!  I am so proud of everyone for their dedication to the cause, and so thankful to everyone who supported our team with pledges and by joining us in the walk.  With efforts like these, I have no doubt we are getting closer to finding a cure, and helping families and individuals affected by the disease.

There was also an exciting program going on at the university called the Summer Institute for Student Leadership and Global Citizenship.   I did not participate myself, but I did have the chance to sit in on a fantastic presentation by Edgar Sanchez, Coordinator of the Lutheran World Federation in Nicaragua, who I actually had a chance to meet when I was in El Salvador for the Alternative Spring Break.   It was very exciting to have him here in Winnipeg and to be able to hear him speak about his experiences with development and community projects similar to the one I participated in over the reading week this year.

I guess that is all the news I have for you guys.  For now, I’m really excited to spend my very first summer in the city and finally get a chance to really explore the city with my friends.   I can feel a great summer ahead, with lots of work but lots of fun.  I wish you all a great summer and I will be back with more blogs in September.

Cheers.

Joy
