Justin Ladia

Faculty: 4th year, Architecture
Completed: University 1
Pursuing: Bachelor of Environmental Design
Plans to Pursue: Master of Interior Design

Justin Ladia is a bright, confident 4th year interior design student in the Faculty of Architecture. But things could have gone differently if it hadn't been for University 1.

"Without University 1 I really think I would still be in a state of confusion. I basically had two directions that I could go in - Computer Science or Architecture. I took classes in my first year related to both areas and that was what really what helped me decide. It was an awakening."

Specifically, it was a class in Environmental Design that sold him on Architecture where he now thrives, particularly while participating in the studio courses.

"Every year I have liked the studio courses the most because it's a different style of learning. It's set up so that everyone can interact and share ideas with each other while you are working. Basically, in the studio classes we make plans and conceptual drawings. Lots of thought goes into this, they are very personal. I really like seeing how people think. The products that they produce are really interesting and evocative of their personalities."

Justin is also making the most of his participation in a local publication. "Another student and I are responsible for creating a publication called "Warehouse" that showcases student work. It is the 19th volume of this publication. I enjoy it because graphic design is another one of my interests. The work also looks good on a resume."

Justin was also involved in the Student Architectural Society and has contributed a comic series to the Manitoban, the University of Manitoba's student newspaper.

After finishing his undergraduate degree Justin is planning to do his graduate studies in either Interior Design or Architecture.

He also has a dream to one day bring together Canadian designers.

"I have always wanted to create a centre for all types of designers to understand what it means to be a Canadian designer. Canadian design hasn't been focused on as much as it should. Everything we do is design and I want to understand other perspectives and cultures."
