Lori Adamson
Faculty: 2nd year, Medicine
Completed: Bachelor of Science
Pursuing: Medical Doctorate
Lori Adamson spent last summer working in the small hospital in Neepawa where she was born. She even assisted the very doctor who delivered her 20-something years ago.
For the 2nd year Medicine student, the experience was energizing and enlightening.
“It gave me an idea of what practicing will be like, and a better understanding of the options in various towns in rural Manitoba.”
The Neepawa-born, Gladstone-raised student is strongly considering returning to a rural community and setting up shop as a local family doctor after graduating, but until then, she is enjoying her experience in the Faculty of Medicine.
“Med school can be overwhelming and very time-consuming, but it is extremely rewarding.”
Outside of her studies, she is the vice-president of the Faculty’s Rural Interest Group, involved in the Family Medicine Interest Group and the Interprofessional Healthcare group, and she even helps plan Medicine’s annual art show.
Her active lifestyle doesn’t end with Medicine however.
“In my spare time I love to be outdoors. I find time to go camping, canoeing, golfing, and swimming in the summer. In the winter I love to skate, play hockey, cross-country and downhill ski, and be outside as much as possible.”
When she first came to Winnipeg, Lori was overwhelmed by the size of the city and university. But she warmed up to her new environment quickly.
Lori now gives university tours to high school students from Gladstone who are considering the University of Manitoba, even going so far as to help them register for classes.
During those tours she provides the students with insight into the university experience.
“It’s more than just going to university; it’s about having the chance to apply your life skills, to explore and be your own person, and to truly find your independence.”
