Tito Daodu
Faculty: 2nd year, Medicine
Pursuing: Medical Doctorate, Bachelor of Science in Medicine
Tito Daodu has lived and studied in many different places, but seems to have found a home at the University of Manitoba.
The 2nd year medical student was born in Nigeria, has lived in Jamaica, England and Canada, and took her undergraduate degree at St. Francis Xavier in Nova Scotia.
But when it came time to apply for Medical school, Tito had only one place in mind.
"I was set to come to the U of M right from the beginning. I didn't want to go anywhere else and my parents didn't want me to go anywhere else. I applied to a few other universities, but I only did it to have a Plan B in case this didn't work out."
Not surprisingly for someone so well-traveled, Tito is interested in global public health.
"Medicine is useful in every country, so becoming a doctor is a way for me to make myself an accessible member of the global community. It's my passion. I can't imagine myself doing anything else."
Tito has even parlayed her interest into some unique study opportunities.
"This summer I did the Bachelor of Science Medicine program in Nigeria. I came across a professor from Nigeria whose research I became very interested in. I approached my supervisor with the idea to travel and study in Nigeria and she was fully supportive of the idea. I was able to get funding to go."
Tito is also actively engaged in the student community, belonging to several student groups.
"I'm involved with the Medical Students Association as the Global Health Liaison contact. The position entails advocating, educating, and engaging students in global public health topics and issues. I have planned several events over this past year including the Global Health Awareness Week, Reverse Trick-or-treat where we handed out fair trade chocolate door to door, and launching a new website."
While her active lifestyle keeps him on the go, Tito says she always has time to enjoy the surroundings at the U of M.
"I like the space. This year was the first time that I have seen the campus in the summer and it is beautiful! The atmosphere is really relaxed and community oriented. Friendly Manitoba actually exists!"
